Pekingese's walk schedule — general orientation only:

Max 15 min per walk · 2 walks a day · 34 min potty breaks · free play untimed

64 min/day total outside

General guideline: about 5 minutes per month of age, up to twice a day.

Popular rule of thumb for joint safety — not a measured limit; the PDSA notes there's no scientific evidence behind it, so treat it as a starting point and adjust with your vet.

What the schedule doesn't cover

Short walks are the point — but they leave the rest of the day open. A few things that help, on and off the lead.

Walking a Pekingese

Pekingese are a dignified, flat-faced (brachycephalic) toy breed with a heavy double coat — owners keep activity gentle and watch carefully for overheating.

Low energyenergy level — general orientation

A flat-faced toy breed with a dense coat — overheats quickly and is content with short, gentle strolls in cool conditions. Keep to the cool parts of the day, use a harness rather than a collar, and watch for heavy panting. They are not distance walkers.

The Pekingese is a flat-faced (brachycephalic) breed. See our simple guide to walking and caring for flat-faced dogs — heat safety, harnesses, and the breathing signs to watch for.

What temperature is too hot or too cold for a Pekingese?

Low heat toleranceToyLong coat

Too hot — Below 22 °C a walk is usually comfortable. From 22 °C, shorten it, keep to the shade and bring water. From 26 °C, it is better to wait for a cooler hour.

The Pekingese tolerates heat poorly, so a stricter heat threshold applies here.

The Pekingese is also a flat-faced (brachycephalic) breed, and panting cools it far less — treat the figures above as a ceiling rather than a target, and turn back at the first noisy or laboured breathing.

Too cold — Above 5 °C a walk is usually fine. Between −5 °C and 5 °C keep it short and dry the paws afterwards. At −5 °C and below, only go out for potty breaks.

We do not have a cold-tolerance rating for the Pekingese, so the figures above follow its size and coat rather than a breed-specific rating.

Humidity, wind, sun and the individual dog move these figures on the day. Open the live walk-weather check to see the current reading for your city and which of the coming hours are comfortable.

General orientation, not veterinary advice. Sensitivity to heat and cold also depends on age, weight, coat condition and health — ask your vet about your own dog.

Pekingese walks this month

Winter — Deep-winter season across much of the US and UK — shorter daylight, icy paths and road salt call for shorter, more frequent walks and a quick paw-wipe afterwards.

Spring — Spring conditions across much of the US and UK — mild temperatures suit longer walks, though wet paths and shedding season make a quick towel-down worthwhile.

Summer — Peak-heat season across much of the US and UK — plan walks for cooler morning and evening hours and keep an eye on pavement temperature.

Autumn — Autumn conditions across much of the US and UK — cooling temperatures suit longer walks, and earlier dusk makes reflective gear sensible on evening rounds.

In the Southern Hemisphere seasons are reversed — if you are south of the equator, flip this guidance.

  • Pekingese is a flat-faced (brachycephalic) breed and handles heat poorly — prefer cooler morning or evening walks, keep sessions short, watch for heavy panting, and always carry water.
  • Pavement check on warm days: press the back of your hand to the pavement for 7 seconds — if it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for paws.
  • Cold-season paw care: road salt and de-icing grit can irritate paws — wipe or rinse paws after walks and watch for ice building up between the pads.

General orientation only — based on typical seasonal conditions, not a forecast for your location.
