Walking a Rat Terrier
Rat Terriers are alert, energetic, deeply people-oriented dogs that thrive with daily play.
The Rat Terrier's walking challenge is less about distance and more about focus: a nose-to-the-ground hunting instinct means interesting smells and small movements can pull attention away from loose-leash manners, so leash training benefits from starting early and practicing in low-distraction settings before working up to a busy park. This is a genuinely high-energy breed, and a brisk walk alone often isn't enough — pairing daily exercise with a game of fetch, a scent-based puzzle, or focused training reps satisfies both body and mind. Because of their strong prey drive, a secure leash or fenced area matters more than for many breeds, and their short coat means a cold-weather layer is worth carrying along on chilly outings.
What temperature is too hot or too cold for a Rat Terrier?
Too hot — Below 26 °C a walk is usually comfortable. From 26 °C, shorten it, keep to the shade and bring water. From 32 °C, it is better to wait for a cooler hour.
Too cold — Above 5 °C a walk is usually fine. Between −5 °C and 5 °C keep it short and dry the paws afterwards. At −5 °C and below, only go out for potty breaks.
