80 min/day total outside

General guideline: about 5 minutes per month of age, up to twice a day.

Popular rule of thumb for joint safety — not a measured limit; the PDSA notes there's no scientific evidence behind it, so treat it as a starting point and adjust with your vet.

What the schedule doesn't cover

Short walks are the point — but they leave the rest of the day open. A few things that help, on and off the lead.

Walking a Scottish Terrier

Scottish Terriers are dignified, independent-minded terriers — bold, alert companions who are devoted to their families while politely reserved with strangers.

Moderate energyenergy level — general orientation

Walking a Scottish Terrier is a pleasure once you plan around their prey drive and love of the chase. Because they are hardwired to pursue small, fast-moving animals and to follow interesting scents, they are safest on a leash unless they are inside a fully fenced area. Sturdy and weather-resistant, they handle cool and damp conditions well, so daily walks plus a little sniffing and exploring keep this spirited companion happily engaged and comfortably exercised.

What temperature is too hot or too cold for a Scottish Terrier?

Moderate heat toleranceHigh cold tolerance

Too hot — Below 26 °C a walk is usually comfortable. From 26 °C, shorten it, keep to the shade and bring water. From 32 °C, it is better to wait for a cooler hour.

Too cold — Above 0 °C a walk is usually fine. Between −12 °C and 0 °C keep it short and dry the paws afterwards. At −12 °C and below, only go out for potty breaks.

Humidity, wind, sun and the individual dog move these figures on the day. Open the live walk-weather check to see the current reading for your city and which of the coming hours are comfortable.

General orientation, not veterinary advice. Sensitivity to heat and cold also depends on age, weight, coat condition and health — ask your vet about your own dog.

Scottish Terrier walks this month

Winter — Deep-winter season across much of the US and UK — shorter daylight, icy paths and road salt call for shorter, more frequent walks and a quick paw-wipe afterwards.

Spring — Spring conditions across much of the US and UK — mild temperatures suit longer walks, though wet paths and shedding season make a quick towel-down worthwhile.

Summer — Peak-heat season across much of the US and UK — plan walks for cooler morning and evening hours and keep an eye on pavement temperature.

Autumn — Autumn conditions across much of the US and UK — cooling temperatures suit longer walks, and earlier dusk makes reflective gear sensible on evening rounds.

In the Southern Hemisphere seasons are reversed — if you are south of the equator, flip this guidance.

  • Pavement check on warm days: press the back of your hand to the pavement for 7 seconds — if it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for paws.
  • Cold-season paw care: road salt and de-icing grit can irritate paws — wipe or rinse paws after walks and watch for ice building up between the pads.

General orientation only — based on typical seasonal conditions, not a forecast for your location.
