What the schedule doesn't cover

Short walks are the point — but they leave the rest of the day open. A few things that help, on and off the lead.

Walking a Xoloitzcuintli

The Xoloitzcuintli is a poised, watchful, and deeply loyal companion — reserved with strangers, devoted to its own people, and calmer at home than its agile, athletic frame might suggest.

Moderate energyenergy level — general orientation

A Xolo enjoys daily walks and active play and is happiest with a reliable outlet for its athleticism, though it does not demand the relentless exercise of a working breed. The bigger consideration is skin: with little or no coat, the hairless variety burns easily, so seek shade, apply a dog-safe sunscreen to exposed skin in strong sun, and favor cooler parts of the day. In cold or wet weather the same dog chills quickly and appreciates a well-fitted coat. Xolos generally tolerate warmth well thanks to their origins, but that is not the same as tolerating direct midday sun — comfort and skin protection should guide every outing.

What temperature is too hot or too cold for a Xoloitzcuintli?

High heat toleranceLow cold tolerance

Too hot — Below 26 °C a walk is usually comfortable. From 26 °C, shorten it, keep to the shade and bring water. From 32 °C, it is better to wait for a cooler hour.

Too cold — Above 5 °C a walk is usually fine. Between −5 °C and 5 °C keep it short and dry the paws afterwards. At −5 °C and below, only go out for potty breaks.

Humidity, wind, sun and the individual dog move these figures on the day. Open the live walk-weather check to see the current reading for your city and which of the coming hours are comfortable.

General orientation, not veterinary advice. Sensitivity to heat and cold also depends on age, weight, coat condition and health — ask your vet about your own dog.

Xoloitzcuintli walks this month

Winter — Deep-winter season across much of the US and UK — shorter daylight, icy paths and road salt call for shorter, more frequent walks and a quick paw-wipe afterwards.

Spring — Spring conditions across much of the US and UK — mild temperatures suit longer walks, though wet paths and shedding season make a quick towel-down worthwhile.

Summer — Peak-heat season across much of the US and UK — plan walks for cooler morning and evening hours and keep an eye on pavement temperature.

Autumn — Autumn conditions across much of the US and UK — cooling temperatures suit longer walks, and earlier dusk makes reflective gear sensible on evening rounds.

In the Southern Hemisphere seasons are reversed — if you are south of the equator, flip this guidance.

  • Pavement check on warm days: press the back of your hand to the pavement for 7 seconds — if it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for paws.
  • Cold-season paw care: road salt and de-icing grit can irritate paws — wipe or rinse paws after walks and watch for ice building up between the pads.

General orientation only — based on typical seasonal conditions, not a forecast for your location.
